Merton & Fareham, Fire Control Centre,

Sector: Technology / Data Centres Project: 3 of 5

Working as part of Skanska design and build team, Paul Owen Associates were commissioned as the Civil and Structural design engineers on both these projects. These projects formed part of a country-wide government upgrade of the fire and rescue services.

Both these buildings had to be designed to meet very high design standards and were constructed  to meet a number of security requirements.

The Merton project also needing to meet a 20% target for renewable energy use, which required utilizing both extensive PV structures within the car park areas as well as the installation of a wind turbine.

The external  hardstandings for both sites had challenges  to meet the clients requirements in relation  to the external levels or with the requirements of the below-ground drainage systems. In both locations the external works also included the construction of new access roads which were designed to adoptable standards and the remodeling of the highways to enable site access.

Key Facts

  • complex ground conditions
  • concrete frame structure designed to meet the security requirement of the client
  • extensive earth works to determine optimum building level
  • adoptable standard access roads and off site highway works
  • below ground drainage
  • wind turbine and PV structures within car park
